Heavy Rainfall Causes Widespread Flooding Across Cilegon City
Flooding has affected several areas in Cilegon City, Banten, on January 2–3, 2026 following days of heavy rainfall with high intensity. Continuous rain caused drainage systems and small rivers to overflow, allowing water to inundate residential neighborhoods and major roads. The flooding began during the night and expanded by morning, significantly disrupting daily activities. Several districts in Cilegon were reported to be affected, particularly densely populated residential areas and locations near industrial zones. The water level varied across locations, ranging from ankle-deep to waist-high in some areas. As a result, many residents were forced to remain in their homes, while others evacuated to safer locations to avoid potential dangers.
In addition to damaging homes, the flood severely disrupted transportation. Key roads became impassable due to deep water and strong currents, causing traffic congestion and halting mobility. Economic activities were also affected, including delays in goods distribution and interruptions to local businesses. The local government, through the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), immediately implemented emergency response measures. Officers were deployed to monitor affected areas, assist with evacuations, and distribute essential supplies such as food, clean water, and basic necessities. Emergency teams and volunteers remained on standby to anticipate further risks.
Authorities stated that the flooding was not only caused by extreme weather conditions but was also worsened by inadequate drainage systems. Blocked waterways and limited water absorption areas contributed to the severity of the flooding, especially in urban and industrial zones. These factors have raised concerns regarding environmental management and infrastructure planning. This flood serves as an important reminder of the increasing risk of hydrometeorological disasters during the rainy season. Residents are urged to remain vigilant, maintain environmental cleanliness, and follow official updates from authorities to reduce the potential impact of future flooding events.
Flood Impacts on Parked Vehicles and Public Safety in Cilegon
Meanwhile, the Head of the Traffic Unit of Cilegon Police, AKP Ridwan Koto, confirmed that flooding in Ciwandan District resulted in a resident’s car being swept away by strong flood currents. He explained that the heavy flow of water along the Cilegon–Anyer road caused the vehicle, which was parked near the roadside, to be dragged into a drainage channel. The incident occurred as floodwaters overflowed onto the road due to intense rainfall and water discharge from nearby areas.
According to AKP Ridwan Koto, the car was unoccupied at the time of the incident, and no casualties were reported. However, the event highlighted the danger posed by fast-moving floodwaters, particularly in areas with poor drainage systems. Authorities urged residents to avoid parking vehicles near flood-prone roads and to remain cautious during periods of heavy rainfall to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
