Nature Tourism: Cikaso Waterfall the Stunning Harmony of Three Waterfalls in the Heart of South Sukabumi
Curug Cikaso, located in Ciniti Village, Cibitung District, Sukabumi Regency, West Java, is one of the region's leading natural destinations, offering unique geographical beauty and cultural significance. The waterfall is widely known for its rare formation: three cascades falling side by side from a height of approximately 80 meters. This makes for a magnificent sight, vastly different from typical single-stream waterfalls. Its pristine condition and the adventurous access required to reach it attract both tourists and nature enthusiasts.
Geographical Uniqueness and Local Nomenclature
The three streams of Curug Cikaso possess distinct names Curug Aki, Curug Meong, and Curug Asepan given by the local community, with each name reflecting the character of its flow. Curug Aki, named after the figure of the "grandfather" (Aki in Sundanese), symbolizes the most stable, solid, and continuous flow. Curug Meong, derived from the name "cat" (Meong), refers to its more agile and slender stream, though some local myths also involve a cat legend in the area. Meanwhile, Curug Asepan, originating from the word asep (smoke or vapor), is so named because this stream is often enveloped in intense mist or water spray. Hydrologically, these three powerful currents converge into one large reservoir pool. This pool is particularly famous for its clear blue-green (tosca) water color, a stunning visual phenomenon caused by the reflection of sunlight off the mineral content at the pool's floor.
To reach the main location of Curug Cikaso, the journey is divided into two stages after arriving at the retribution post. The Water Route (Boat) is the most popular method, where visitors hire a motorized boat (klotok) to navigate the Cikaso River tributary for approximately 10–15 minutes. This brief journey offers views of lush river cliffs and effectively minimizes the land trekking time, with boat rental fees typically negotiated per group. Alternatively, the Land Route (Trekking) offers a more immersive trekking experience, passing through pathways that can sometimes be slippery, with a travel time of about 30–45 minutes. This path is highly suitable for visitors looking to seek a closer connection with the local forest vegetation.
As one of the most iconic natural landmarks in South Sukabumi, Curug Cikaso offers more than just a view. The uniqueness of its three streams which carry a philosophy of local wisdom converge to create a photogenic and tranquil tosca pool. The journey to the location, whether via the exotic water route or the challenging trekking path, makes it a complete destination for true adventure seekers. Ultimately, Curug Cikaso serves as a reminder of Indonesia's natural wealth that we must protect. A visit there is not merely for healing, but a tangible effort to appreciate and preserve the unparalleled natural heritage of West Java.
